Magic Kingdom
NOBODY CRIED WHEN they got to Disneyland, but something happened to Frankie. As soon as the tram from the parking lot pulled up to the front gates, his posture changed. His shoulders stopped hunching, his chin emerged from the burrow of his neck. Bug had not realized how curled up he usually was, like a turtle in his shell, until she saw him craning his head every which way.
He wanted to see everything. He wanted to go on everything. Bug may have had a list ranking the rides, but for Frankie, there were no bad rides: the Mad Tea Party, the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain. All were fantastic. Amazing. Letâs do it again. Even the monorail, which wasnât really a ride, Frankie loved. Bug thought Disneyland was fun, but for Frankie it really seemed to be magic.
Heâd brought Phillipâs camera with him, and he snapped pictures everywhere, even posed with Pluto, which Bug felt was maybe babyish but was glad Frankie was doing it because then she got to also. If Danny laughed at the photos, or at the Mouseketeer hats with their names stitched on them theyâd each bought, sheâd be able to say sheâd done it for Frankie.
They rode rides until lunchtime. When Bug had come with Teri, theyâd packed lunchesâher aunt said the food prices there were exorbitantâbut Phillip and Mama let Frankie and Bug eat at a restaurant near the Country Bear Jamboree: fried chicken and French fries, washed down with a large soda each!
âWhat now?â Phillip asked.
âPirates of the Caribbean!â Bug exclaimed. âAnd I want to do Space Mountain again.â
âAnd I want to do Star Tours again.â
âBut the line is so long,â Bug complained.
âI know, but itâs a fun line.â
âThatâs true,â Bug agreed.
âIf you donât mind,â Hedvig said, âI would like to go to Tom Sawyer Island.â
Hedvig hadnât made a single request all day, so though Bug felt that, like the monorail or the riverboat, the raft to Tom Sawyerâs island did not constitute a ride, she agreed. At least the line wasnât too long.
Over on the island, they climbed around the shore, visited the fort. And then Frankie got a funny look.
âWhatâs the matter?â Bug asked.
âI have to find Phillip,â he said.
âIs everything okay?â
He nodded, but his face looked weird. He found Phillip, and Frankie whispered something and Phillip looked around. âOkay, letâs just go.â
On the raft back, Frankie was dancing from side to side, like really fast. Bug mightâve thought he was goofing around were it not for the grimace on his face. And that was when Bug realized he had to pee. Now that she thought about it, she had to go too. Sheâd drunk a lot of soda with lunch.
There was a bank of bathrooms right when they got off the ferry. But Frankie didnât go in those.
âWeâll meet you at the Pirates of the Caribbean,â Phillip called behind him.
After the bathroom, they went to the Pirates ride. Mama said they could go on without Frankie, but Bug preferred to wait until Phillip and a very relieved-looking Frankie reappeared.
